Franklin Basin, Logan Canyon, Utah

While we were in Logan, Utah this past Friday, we asked about wildflowers up in Logan Canyon at the visitor information desk in the city building. We drove up to Logan to see the wildflowers that are supposedly at their peak between mid-July and mid-August. The advice we received was that the best place to see them is all the way up to Franklin Basin. The guide drew a circle at the very top of the map. He said we'd probably need a car with high clearance.

The road is gravel sometimes and dirt other times, but a lot of it is fine. Sometimes there are large rocks. Other places there's a lot of bumpy water erosion. We were glad to have a vehicle with higher clearance than some. Even so, we did pound down onto a rock or something we didn't see with our undercarriage when we drove through some shade. But no lights on the dashboard came on, so we're hoping nothing essential was damaged. We also have new scratches on the passenger side of the car because of it being a narrow road and another vehicle was passing, so we hugged the side by a pine tree with sharp branches.

Along the way we'd see spots of bright colored wildflowers. We kept saying we'd stop and take pictures on the way back. Sometimes I couldn't wait and asked my husband to stop the car so I could get out and take a picture.

At one point, there were several cows in the middle of the road. I wanted my husband to drive close enough so I could take a picture, but the cows just moved off the road.

There's some beautiful land up there.

Eventually, we crossed into Idaho. That's where the magic is. There are huge fields full of multiple colors and types of wildflowers. It was extraordinary. We were saying it seemed like a grand finale of fireworks. The pictures do not do it justice because it's hard to see the large variety and the colors.
Here are a few other pictures I took along the way.

From the beginning, where I really wanted to go was a place we visited several years ago-- Tony Grove Lake. I'll blog about what happened there next.
