I watched this little squirrel scamper and leap across the top of our fence between one neighbor's shed and another neighbor's walnut tree at least fifty times. It runs the same route over and over again.
Eventually, it took a break to perch in the very top of a tree near the shed and chattered like a maniac while flipping its tail up and down and back and forth. I thought it might be announcing its nut-gathering success and was trying to attract a mate. Then I did a little research and found out squirrels make a different sound when they are mating. There must have been a predator (like a cat) nearby and the squirrel was just defending itself and its territory. Supposedly, cats like the surprise of the hunt and will frequently find different prey when this kind of chattering begins.
Now it's quiet and back to running nuts again.
Squirrels are so entertaining!
